Exploring And Rethinking Strategies in Health Design & Communication...

Diabetes stands as one of the misunderstood health conditions in today’s society. The symptoms and manifestations of diabetes vary amongst individuals, which makes it challenging to determine a singular solution. These complexities extend far beyond its conventional definition and impose significant strains not only on those directly affected by the condition but also on the broader community. From its profound implications on daily life to its intricate challenges, understanding diabetes comprehensively is crucial to navigate its multifaceted nature effectively.

With KOTO Methods, this campaign hopes to promote education, re-invention, and encourage ongoing discussion to help understand not only diabetes but other health conditions as well.

I. Physical Prototypes To start the process of creating the physical product. We started with paper prototypes - printing the dielines before folding and cutting each printed prototype. Once we were satisfied with what container and divider best seem fit for KOTO, we moved towards a different material - single corrugated cardboard. This material was not only accessible, durable, and easy to carve (for this process) - it was one of the best sustainable option for a product made for the health industry.

The next phase of prototyping involved laser cutting with SP Lasers. Once the dielines were made on Illustrator, it was then exported to a laser cutter, which was then manually assembled by us.

II. Packaging Dielines
Part of the process in creating physical prototypes was creating the dielines that would contain what parts of the box needed to be indented and cut. The blue indicated what needed to be etched or slightly cut, while the red indicated lines that needed to be cut through all the way. Once those parts were determined, the SP Laser will then follow the assigned instruction. This step allowed us to understand what parts worked well together, and what didn’t. Letting us experiment with different dimensions and shapes all the components could transform into.

III. Website
(This is not the final rendition of the website)
The KOTO website was created in support of users who would want to gain more information about the product before deciding to obtain their own KOTO kit. Visit the link here!

IV. Final Packaging Design Version 1
By the end of the term we have managed to create the Koto Kit, Travel Kit, Sticker Box, and Acrylic Charm. All components followed the design systems and branding assets that were made for KOTO. We incorporated illustrations that matched the brand in order to create unity, a fresh perspective on incorporating corporate designs without diluting the brand essence.

These are different views of the box to show the current design of the KOTO Kit.

VI. Packaging Design Evolution
The transition from paper prototypes to the final product was a long process that involved a series of trial and error for all stages. KOTO’s transition took into account the health components (Insulin pen, needles, sticker box, travel kit, disposal needle box, and manual) as well as the box components - dividers, that would help everything stay in place.

VII. Technical Drawings
We wanted to help create some clarity about KOTO and the different boxes that come with it - not only for diabetics, but for non-diabetics as well. It showcases a mock-up illustration of each component, while also displaying the measurements in hopes of clarifying questions regarding the physical product. This was a new addition to the website and other digital aspects regarding the brand that will be further developed in the future.
